Teams from our A1 Wentbridge major viaduct refurbishment have donated £7,500 worth of equipment to help transform a local community allotment.

Our Wentbridge team support valuable community greenspace

Bless Community Support runs the Little Buds community allotment space, which is provided by Upton Parish Council. Bless supports the wellbeing of local residents - physically, psychologically and socially.

Little Buds helps children and their families grow fruit and vegetables, explore nature and learn how to support the environment.

Over the past 3 months, our donation has helped provide:

  • a summerhouse
  • new surfacing to footpaths and seating area
  • fencing
  • raised beds
  • new seating

We've even provided a luxury 'bug hotel'

Our principal Wentbridge contractor, Octavius, took the lead - managing new surfacing for outbuildings, footpaths as well as the seating area.

The allotment was officially opened on Friday 11 August 2023 by Julie Green, CEO of Bless Community Services and Mike Benn, Area Manager, Octavius.

More than 100 local people attended alongside representatives from National Highways and contractors who delivered the work.

Julie Green said:

“I would like to start with a massive thank you to all the contractors and contributors who were involved in making Little Buds a huge success, becoming a legacy for our community for years to come. Every single person has been fantastic and so kind, we cannot believe how lucky we are to have you all to fetch this to life.”

Simon Boyle, National Highways Regional Director for Yorkshire and the North East, added:

“It was great to be able to attend the opening of the Bless Community Allotment and see firsthand what our teams have worked hard to help contribute to. Being present at the opening event was humbling, it showed how through working together, providing support, and giving our time, we can help to make a huge impact to local communities.”

Working together we helped provide an accessible and inclusive space for the community to enjoy. This is a key part of Bless’ vision. It also aligns with our social value aims for community wellbeing and equality, diversity and inclusion.
