    East bridge works complete

We’ve completed our work to strengthen the east bridge ahead schedule.

The reinforcing steel plates, which were reaching the end of their serviceable life, have been replaced with stronger, corrosion-resistant carbon fibre rods. This work will keep the structure safe and reduce the risk of emergency repairs in the future.

We’ve now taken away all of the lane restrictions on the east bridge and the junction is now operating as normal.

We won’t need to do any more work this year but will need to come back to carry out the same work on the west bridge.

Work is currently planned to start in summer 2024.

Please check back here for updates.

    Planned overnight closures this week

We’re installing the final few carbon fibre rods in lane one of the east bridge. This means we’ll soon be able to start putting the surfacing layers and road markings back in place in this lane.

We’ll need some overnight closures to complete this resurfacing work and some other activities. The steel barrier which has been in place since July for safety is due to be removed and will be replaced with traffic cones for a short period of time. This will also allow the new road surface to set before vehicles can drive over it.

    Closure information

We’ll need to close the east bridge overnight between 10pm and 5am on Tuesday 17 and Thursday 19 October 2023.

We were due to carry out this work between Wednesday 11 and Friday 13, but had to cancel due to poor weather conditions. Our work (particularly the early stages of resurfacing which will enable us to remove the steel safety barrier) is particularly weather dependent.

Please continue to check this webpage for the latest information.

    Diversion information

    • Motorway traffic will be diverted via either M20 eastbound to junction 2 and return or M25 junction 4 and return.
    • Non-motorway traffic will be diverted via A20, A224, A25 and A225 to join the A20 again at Farningham.

    East bridge reaches halfway point

We’re almost halfway through our work to strengthen the east bridge over the M20 at the Swanley Interchange

Next week, we’ll need to move our safe working area across to the other lane (left hand side) and need to close part of the roundabout overnight to make this change safely.

Closure information – change in road layout

    • The eastern section of the roundabout between the M20 eastbound entry and westbound exit slip roads will be closed overnight (10pm to 5am) from Tuesday 29 August until the morning of Sunday 3 September 2023.

Once open again, there will still be lane closures, however rather than our workforce being on your right, they'll be on your left.

Our traffic management layout on the M25 junction 3 clockwise exit slip road will remain unchanged.

    Diversion information

    • Motorway traffic will be diverted via either M20 eastbound to junction 2 and return or M25 junction 4 and return.
    • Non-motorway traffic will be diverted via A20, A224, A25 and A225 to join the A20 again at Farningham.

  • 14 August 2023

    Overnight closures

We've started to install the new carbon fibre rods into the bridge deck which will increase its strength and keep the structure safe. There are some more overnight closures this week while we carry out some additional sandblasting.

    Closure information

To do this safely, we’ll need to close the roundabout between the M20 eastbound entry and westbound exit slip roads overnight (10pm-5am) on Monday 14 and Wednesday 16 August.

    Diversion information

Drivers will be diverted via either M20 eastbound to junction 2 and return or M25 junction 4 and return.

Non-motorway traffic will be diverted via A20, A224, A25 and A225 to join the A20 again at Farningham.

    Works update and overnight closures

Our work to strengthen the bridges over the M20 at the Swanley interchange is well underway.

We’ve recently removed the steel strengthening plates from lane two on the eastern section of the roundabout. The underlying bridge deck is now exposed which means we can continue with additional concrete repairs.

Soon we’ll be able to install new carbon fibre rods to make the bridge stronger, safer and able to better cope with predicted future traffic loads. Before we can do that, we need to prepare the road surface using a technique called sandblasting.

    Closure information

To do this safely, we’ll need to close the roundabout between the M20 eastbound entry and westbound exit slip roads overnight (10pm-5am) from Wednesday 2 August to the morning of Saturday 5 August 2023.

    Diversion information

Motorway traffic will be diverted via either M20 eastbound to junction 2 and return or M25 junction 4 and return.

Non-motorway traffic will be diverted via A20, A224, A25 and A225 to join the A20 again at Farningham.

    Work gets underway

We’ve created a safe working area for our team and can start our repairs to the bridges at junction 3 on the M25 in Kent.

We're starting with the eastern section and there are now lane closures here including the M25 junction 3 clockwise exit slip road. We’ll keep an eye on the traffic lights at the junction to make sure traffic flows as smoothly as possible.

We’ve removed the road surface and will survey and mark up the locations of underlying steel plates which need to be replaced to keep the structure safe.

When we remove these plates, the bridge deck will become exposed. This will allow us to inspect the condition of the bridge deck and repair any areas of concrete that may be damaged.

After this, we’ll be able to install new carbon-fibre rods to make the bridge stronger and reduce the need of carriageway repairs here in the future.

    Brands Hatch Superbike Championships 2023

The Bennetts British Superbike Championships take place this weekend at Brands Hatch from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 July.

If you’re planning on travelling to the circuit, we recommend that you plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey. Alternative routes into the circuit are available via M20 junction 2 or M26 junction 2a to join the A20 London Road northbound.

We’re also expecting more journeys to be make to the coast and Kent ports now that the summer holidays are here.

    Plan your journey

  • Work starts soon

We’re carrying out essential repairs to the east and west bridges at junction 3 on the M25 in Kent.

The first thing we need to do is install a temporary barrier on the east bridge which we'll be working behind.

Once this barrier has been installed, there will be lane closures during the day and overnight around the eastern section of the interchange, including the M25 junction 3 clockwise exit slip road. This will allow us to work safely and keep traffic moving through the junction.

    Closure information

The eastern section of the roundabout, between the M20 eastbound entry and westbound exit slip roads, will be closed overnight between 10pm and 5am from Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 July 2023.

    Diversion information

Motorway traffic will be diverted via either M20 eastbound to junction 2 and return or M25 junction 4 and return.

Non-motorway traffic will be diverted via A20, A224, A25 and A225 to join the A20 again at Farningham.

Project information

Overview

The Swanley interchange connects the M25 with the M20 and provides a vital link between the Kent ports, London and the south east.

It also connects the country to local attractions such as Brands Hatch and the Kent Downs.

We’re strengthening the two bridges which carry the road over the M20 by replacing the existing steel plates with corrosion resistant carbon-fibre rods to keep the structure safe and secure.

These bridges over the M20 were originally built with bonded steel plates in the 1970s. Additional repairs were made in the 1990s.

Work is now needed to reinforce these structures so they can withstand predicted future traffic loads and keep the bridges safe.

Work on the east bridge is due to take place between July and November 2023.

We’re planning to carry out the same work on the west bridge in summer 2024.

Carrying out this reinforcement work will:

  • improve safety and increase the life span of the bridge
  • reduce the likelihood of disruption caused by emergency repairs
  • strengthen the road surface from vehicles carrying heavier loads
  • reinforce the structures so they’re able to carry predicted future traffic loads
  • reduce the risk of weight restrictions being imposed at the junction in the future
