Women in Construction Week - behind the scenes with the A303 team

This week marks Women in Construction Week, so it's the perfect opportunity to take a peek behind the scenes of the busy A303 Sparkford to Ilchester dualling scheme and meet some of the women keeping the scheme running. Here they offer their thoughts on their experiences getting in to, and developing their careers, in a traditionally male-dominated sector.

Julie Phillips, site office manager

Why did you get into construction?
My dad and brother worked in construction and came home with different stories every night. After hearing them, I wanted in!

What advice would you give to women who are interested in starting a career in construction?
Don’t be put off by it being a man’s world, it isn’t any more. You are in one of the best environments to work, and are treated equally.

Caitlyn Eavis-Harmes, office apprentice

How did you get into construction?
I discovered Galliford Try while looking for an apprenticeship. Before to this past year, I knew very little about the construction sector, but I have learned a lot and have grown to enjoy it.

What advice would you give to women who are interested in starting a career in construction?
Don't be afraid to ask for assistance, and don't listen to people who tell you that just because you're a woman, you can't do anything. Women can contribute a variety of abilities and viewpoints to tasks.

Paulina Louro, survey manager

Why did you go into the construction industy?
I finished my degree in Surveying in Cracow (Poland) and generally there are two routes you can take after that: working as a Land Surveyor (bit boring for me) or on a construction site, which is much more interesting. That is the main reason why I started my adventure in the construction industry, as one of very few women at that time.

What advice would you give to women who are interested in starting a career in construction?
If you are considering working in construction – just do that! Don’t listen to anyone who says, “it is not for you.” I will say one more thing – if you are a team player and an openminded person who like challenges – the construction industry is for you!

Thanks to all the team members for sharing their stories with us. We hope it gives some insight into the range and depth of skills and experience we have working in an inclusive and welcoming A303 team.
